Biography: Mata Hari was executed by firing squad for spying for Germany during World War I.

Her guilt was debated for decades, but German documents unsealed in the 1970s proved that Mata Hari was indeed a German agent.

She acquired her stage name "Mata Hari" which means "eye of the day" or "sun" in Malay while living in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). It was also in the Dutch East Indies where she learnt the exotic dances that would later make her famous.
