In total, Longden won over 6,000 races during his time as a jockey, a record that stood for many years. Notable victories include multiple wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, further cementing his status as one of the sport's all-time greats.

After retiring as a jockey in 1966, Longden transitioned to a successful career as a horse trainer. He continued to make an impact on the world of horse racing, most notably training Majestic Prince to victory in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes in 1969.

Johnny Longden's achievements in thoroughbred racing led to his being inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1958.
